Brighton-based saxophonist Julian Nicholas looks forward to hearing up-and-coming bands who will be appearing at Love Supreme, the UK’s only greenfield jazz festival, at Glynde Place in East Sussex between Fri 1 and Sun 3 July 2022. These bands will be at the Bandstand (Fri – Sun) and on the Arena stage (Fri evening).

Realised with gusto, panache and much leg-work by Jack Kendon and Eddie Myer, whose successful ACE-funded ‘New Generation Jazz’ promotes national and ‘local’ outfits, this satellite programme grows from strength to strength, and has helped Brighton acts HOWES3 and Abi Flynn and London’s Ezra Collective and Binker & Moses gain national attention.

It’s been running since Love Supreme’s inception in 2013, and has also been greatly supported by several volunteer organisations, including the late Simon D’Souza’s Sax Shop, The Verdict Jazz Club, Brighton Jazz School and members of ‘Trees’ ensemble.

This year’s lineup is as exciting as always as promotional partnerships develop, highlighting both well-established and new acts, and includes:

HOWES3: polished and inventive Oli Howe’s keys-led chromatic harmonic shifts and sophisticated time/groove modulations sit within the Neo-Soul paradigm – watch out for Will Gardner’s big, instinctive sax sound and infectious drums from Luke Campbell. (Friday, Arena Stage)

Tru Thoughts presents Ebi Soda: strong drum‘n’bass grooves with multi-layered, House-inspired, riff-based ostinati and trombone-led lyricism, nicely topped-off with delay and harmoniser effects. (Friday, Bandstand)

QoW Trio: acoustic and truly organic generational meeting of the great Spike Wells (the drummer who lit the fire under such greats as Tubby Hayes and Bobby Wellins) and the rhythmically and tonally powerful emerging saxophonist Riley Stone-Lonergan. Linchpinned by founder member bassist Eddie Myer, this trio delves into the American Songbook and beyond – inspired by the late 50s explorations of Sonny Rollins. (Sunday, Bandstand)

Celebrating Brighton jazz with ‘Trees: Bonsai’: as the ingenius name implies – a reduced and distilled elixir extracted from the infeasibly large ‘Trees’. Terry Pack (bassist and composer) leads a dozen of Brighton’S best in a multi-genre journey of rhythmic and melodic soundscapes. (Friday, Bandstand)

LP Quartet: this exciting new quartet boasts virtuosic corners held by founder Luke Purbrick (guitar) alongside Ben Jones (sax), Adam Bishop (drums) and Lloyd Cootes (double bass). Expect contemporary paradigm new-Brit-sounding textures and groove-scapes with post hard-bop improvisations. (Friday, Bandstand)

Atlanticus: hard-bop UK-USA foursome driven from the Hammond helm of well-established Brighton pianist/composer Terry Seabrook. Joined by USA saxman Peter Fraize, finesseful trumpeter Jack Kendon and Milo Fell on drums. (Saturday, Bandstand)

Lucy Pickering’s Court & Spark tribute to Joni Mitchell: warmth-suffused and heart-felt tribute to the great Joni – both in style and substance. Look out for Beccy Rork on saxophone, weaving her magic around Lucy’s stylish vocals. (Friday, Bandstand)
