Following last year’s very successful Saturday Love All-Dayer in Palmers Green, the vintage event featuring authentic 1980s American and British Funk and Jazz returns to Broomfield Park on 21 June 2025.
Appearing from 3 to 10pm in the classic back-in-time live line-up, will be popular home-grown pioneers Central Line, legendary The Cool Notes and the dynamic sounds of The City Funk Orchestra.
Putting in an appearance this year from the United States will be Tom Browne, an icon of the funk-jazz genre, known for his major hits of 1980 and 1981: The Number 1 Billboard magazine R&B single, ‘Funkin’ for Jamaica (NY)’ and the Number 4 R&B single, ‘Thighs High (Grip Your Hips and Move)’.
In 2024, the Saturday All-Dayer showcased The Brit Funk Association, Atmosfear and The City Funk Orchestra in addition to some of the best DJs. This year’s roster of knowledgeable soul, funk, dance and soul DJs will include Richie Tee (Diversity FM), Keith Robles (Crackers Radio), and Paul Lewis (Solar Radio), who are guaranteed to spin tunes which will take you back to the funky and soulful 1980 club nights.
As veteran funk and jazz DJ and Saturday Love All-Dayer co-organiser Brian Lewis notes, this year’s event is intended to be a fun-filled time for all patrons interested in getting a thoroughly entertaining taste of the creative London music scene of the late 1970s and 80s.
As he fondly remembers:
“The years 1978 -1985 proved to be quite a niche and lively scene born out of the music of early American jazz funk pioneers such as Roy Ayers, Grover Washington, Bob James, Ronnie Laws and Ramsey Lewis, The Blackbyrds, Earth Wind & Fire, the SOS Band, Funkadelic/Parliament, Fatback Band, Change, Rick James, George Benson, Bobby Womack, Luther Vandross, Maze etc. Plus, the whole Philly sound with MFSB, Dexter Wansel, McFadden & Whithead and more.”
“Needless to say, the UK-based groups such as Light of The World, Beggar & Co, The Cool Notes, High Tension, Freeez, Central Line, Atmosfear, Loose Ends, Linx, Imagination, Cool Runners etc were key groups for us young enthusiasts to follow”.
“We listened to Robbie Vincent and Greg Edwards on the radio with Chris Hill, Froggy, Sean French, Jeff Young, Snowboy and even Pete Tong in the clubs. Aspiring DJs and funk lovers then went out to the record shops spending hours trying to get the newest imports and tunes. How we loved doing that, what warm and abiding memories!
“The club scene was really vibrant such as The Royalty in Southgate was the catalyst for us being able to engage with the music with those classic DJs. This led to the All Dayers and Soul Weekenders (Caister) we loved so much and gave us another way of being able to get together with liked minded funksters.”
The Saturday Love All-Dayer, staged in collaboration with the Friends of Broomfield Park, will also feature food stalls and a well-stocked bar.
