A tribute to Wayne Shorter, who has died today at the age of 89, will follow.

Meanwhile there are some great posts appearing to mark the passing of a true innovator and force for good.

  • Herbie Hancock has written: “Wayne Shorter, my best friend, left us with courage in his heart, love and compassion for all, and a seeking spirit for the eternal future. He was ready for his rebirth. As it is with every human being, he is irreplaceable.”
  • Helen Sung: “I believe Wayne lives on with his unique power & grace, but our world is less vibrant without him on this plane of existence. He continues to blaze trails ahead, inspiring me each day. Thank you Wayne – for everything”
  • Charles Lloyd: “It has been a deeply sad morning to learn that my brother and fellow explorer of the Inner and Outer Universe Wayne_Shorter has left town. The Maestro was a visionary, a great composer, and a friend with whom I shared a love for the Eternal Now. Barche Lamsel”
  • Nate Chinen’s New York Times obituary is superbly thoughtful . That description of the “slithery melody and a shrewdly indeterminate harmonic path” of “Nefertiti” says a lot.
  • And Richard Williams’s Guardian obituary is brilliant.
  • Ethan Iverson has written this .
  • And biographer Michelle Mercer remembers …
  • There is a strong piece on John Turville’s Facebook page
  • Our most recent coverage was superb album review by Jon Turney
  • John Watson has sent us an interview he did in 1967

In sadness.

Born Newark, New Jersey, 25 August, 1933. Died Los Angeles, 2 March 2023.
