Fond memories of Ronnie from circa 1998 when I hosted the Voice of Barbados Jazz Beat radio show. We were in correspondence and he kindly sent me his CDs, New York Cats and Airplay (both on the Steeplechase imprint) to air on the programme.. Excellent recordings showcasing his inimitable artistry on baritone sax with the young cats of the day including Ryan Kisor and Geoff Keezer. He will be sadly missed but his outstanding artistry will live on. Condolences to his family and friends.
I saw Ronnie several times when I lived in Montreal in the early 60s and he made a big impact on me – hence the reason I remember him after all these years. However, I cannot recall who he was with at the time – the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band at Birdland or the Rod Levitt Orchestra at the Little Carnegie Hall the same night. The same night we had earlier caught Lionel Hampton’ s Big Band at the Metropole and the previous night the absolutely wonderful Charles Mingus Sextet with Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot. Maybe it was somewhere else I did get around in those days.
This was a great time for jazz in Canada and the USA and the memories of meeting many of the jazz greats from the early days to that time have stayed strong over the passing years. If only I could find the diaries I kept at the time which list the gigs I went to and would hopefully provide the answer to where and when I saw Ronnie Cuber – a very much underrated player.
