RIP Carla Bley

(1936-2023)

France Musique issued this statement earlier today, 17 October 2023: “After a career of more than 70 years and nearly 60 albums, composer and pianist Carla Bley left us this Tuesday morning at the age of 87, says her companion, Steve Swallow.”

We will have tributes later to this massive figure in jazz.

  1. Very sad news. I remember walking into the Hotel Du Vin in Cheltenham during the jazz festival and coming face to face with Carla Bley and Steve Swallow on a rather tight two-seater sofa sitting bolt upright, looking for all the world like Cleopatra and Mark Anthony.

  2. I never forget hearing the album “Escalator over the Hills” – so original and great music… absolutely one of a kind artist and composer. RIP Carla Bley.
