As part of our series focusing on the festival programming at the London venues which courageously promote live jazz throughout the year, we look at the eighteen shows which make up the programme at Pizza Express Dean Street, and focus on a few of them…

Perhaps the jewel in the venue’s crown is two houses on Thursday 20 November for trumpet legend Eddie Henderson on Thursday 20 November. I had the privilege to do an interview with him for his 80th during the pandemic (LINK), and he is as delightful and wise a person as he is a fine musician

Mercury Prize nominee Joe Webb is on the opening night, a very welcome return to London by Ruben Fox who has been making his mark in New York, a rare visit from drummer Tommy Campbell who was the drummer in groups led by John McLaughlin and Sonny Rollins. Talking of Saxophone Colossuses (a pedant is bound to wince at that one) Dave O’Higgins‘ Coltrane programme looks tempting too. And I was surprised to note that there are still some tickets left for Mark Kavuma’s Banger Factory.

Pizza Express Dean Street also has a festival of really interesting young players, especially ones who have come through the Tomorrow’s Warriors programme such as the enlivening young trumpeter Klara Devlin, currently studying at RAM.
