In The Flicker is Leverton Fox’s eighth album. It presents experimental electronic music on the fringe of jazz, but which has the creativity and variety we associate with the best contemporary jazz. The music is full of subtle changes as it develops over the 47 or so minutes of the album, and is music to listen to in a relaxed context straight through without distractions.
The music was recorded in a woodland setting in West Sussex and made use of sounds and found objects in that setting. Trees were used as percussion instruments and there are hints of birdsong and even an occasional moo sound on the Bovine Interlude track. The instruments used were analogue synths, drum machines, percussion, trumpet, and effects and these combine to produce an absorbing range of sounds and grooves, from the gentle ambient sound of the wind as on Crackle Bracken, to the more upbeat deep synth sound that keeps reoccurring on LIDAR Hailing UFOs. The trio mostly make use of electronic instruments and effects, but there are some stunningly beautiful contributions from Alex Bonney’s trumpet, notably on Tågarp Time Travel.
The recording was done using a multi-speaker surround sound system and will be issued in the Dolby Atmos format as well as conventional stereo
