“An international, collaborative experiment” is how Festival Director describes Jazzfest Berlin 2021. Ahead of the opening of the festival on Thursday 4 November, a further press release has been published, developing further the theme of this year’s hybrid digital event, reaching deep into the local scenes of Cairo, São Paulo and Johannesburg, under the banner “SCENES OF NOW”.
PRESS RELEASE STARTS: Numerous musicians from New York, Berlin, Cairo, São Paulo and Johannesburg and all over Europe will be presented with around 40 projects at the Jazzfest Berlin 2021 Three digital guides with exclusive contributions to the featured cities and the programme of the festival live stream at ARTE Concert and Berliner Festspiele on Demand are already online. In addition to familiar guests at the Jazzfest Berlin and established greats on the international scene such as Aki Takase and Han Bennink, this year’s edition offers a hybrid programme that brings together protagonists from the local jazz scenes of Cairo, Johannesburg, São Paulo, Berlin and New York. From over 200 musicians who will appear at the Jazzfest Berlin 2021, 135 will perform live in Berlin during the four days of the festival (4 to 7 November) at 24 concerts in the silent green, the Pierre Boulez Saal, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and rbb’s Kleiner Sendesaal. In addition, a total of six South African acts on stage at Sognage in Johannesburg on Friday and Saturday evening will be streamed live in the Concrete Hall of the silent green, alternating with concerts by musicians from Berlin, New York and Europe. The concerts will be projected onto the four walls surrounding the audience. This multi-channel environment, which enables musicians not playing live in Berlin to feature on the programme in immersive spaces, also features four commissioned audiovisual works from São Paulo, which premiere at the festival. On the website, the wide range of jazz and experimental scenes from Cairo, Johannesburg and São Paulo can now be discovered in three digital guides – in the form of exclusive video interviews, texts, photos and playlists. »With its 40 music productions, the Jazzfest Berlin 2021 is an international, collaborative experiment. Thanks to intensive cooperations, we can make local scenes and artists visible and relate them to one another. With the newly created live projects projects and digital formats the potential space of a hybrid, decentralised festival will be further developed. In the Concrete Hall of the silent green becomes a multidimensional experience space for the audience, in which the digital work ideally complements the live concert.«‒ Nadin Deventer (Artistic Director of the Jazzfest Berlin) PRESS RELEASE ENDS |
