Jazz in the Birthday Honours – Bill Geldard BEM

As far as we can see, there is just one jazz-related honour in the 2022 Birthday Honours…

Congratulations trombonist/arranger Bill Geldard BEM, honoured at the age of 92.

Born in 1929, Bill became a professional musician at the age of 15 His National Service was as  1st Trombone in the RAF Central Band. He played and arranged for the Ted Heath Orchestra. He also worked with John Dankworth, and free-lanced with Geraldo, Mantovani and many more. In the 1970s he ran his own big band. He has composed and arranged for television and films – and also arranged/ conducted/ run brass bands.

Other musicians honoured include Stephen Hough, Chi-Chi Nwanoku, Harry Bicket, Justin Hayward, Elaine Mitchener, Chithra Ramakrishnan…
