“Jazz” in the BBC Proms press pack, released today, gives a total of eight wordsearch results… but they refer to only two events.

One of them a late night double bill at Sage Gateshead, the other a visit to the Royal Albert Hall of the American National Youth Jazz Orchestra…. Details and press blurb below.

The BBC season is from 14 July till 9 September and public booking opens on 13 May.

  1. NYO Jazz and Dee Dee Bridgewater – “Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Jazz
Orchestra performs a collection of jazz standard and big-band classics, featuring
special guest Dee Dee Bridgewater” (1 August).
Yazz Ahmed. Kings Place, November 2020.

2) Yazz Ahmed and Arun Ghosh – This is a double bill of two discrete sets, so the Press blurb is slightly misleading : “Innovative trumpeter and composer Yazz Ahmed and her quartet present a set of intoxicating, psychedelic jazz. Joining her is clarinettist, composer and bandleader Arun Ghosh and his band, bringing hypnotic rhythms and transcendental textures.” ( Late night Prom at Sage Gateshead on 21 July).

NOTES:

Yazz Ahmed’s band is Ralph Wyld (vibraphone), Dave Manington (bass) and Ben Brown (drums).

Arun Ghosh’s band is with Jamil Sherif (piano) Dave Walsh (drums) with musicians from Archipelago: John Pope (bass) and Faye McCalman (tenor sax)

Other shows which caught my eye are:

Self Esteem (Rebecca Lucy Taylor) (Proms at Sage Gateshead, 21 July)

Keep the Faith: Northern Soul (15 July)

Rufus Wainwright – (two concerts / Want Symphonic – 5 September).

Mariza – fado singer (21 July)
