After fourteen years and 563 episodes, The Jazz Sesssion, “the original jazz interview podcast” has a new host, writes Sebastian.
Jason Crane has just handed over the hosting of The Jazz Session to Cape Town-raised, Totonto-based vocalist, composer and LJN contributor Nicky Schrire.
Jason Crane’s last session, posted yesterday 4 August 2021, was called “Meet the New Host”. LINK HERE. Nicky will officially take over on 1 September.
The Jazz Session is a member-supported podcast where supporters receive monthly perks via subscriptions through Patreon (link below). These include “Track of the Week” and a free monthly episode called “The Insider”, a spin-off series where Nicky will chats to jazz industry insiders (managers, label heads, journalists, broadcasters, publicists) about the nuts and bolts of the business.
Jason Crane writes:
“I started The Jazz Session in 2007 after having spent several years on the radio interviewing jazz musicians. At that time I had to explain to everyone what a podcast was and that no, you didn’t need an iPod to listen to the show.”
“There have since been more than 560 episodes over the show’s 14 years, featuring musicians famous and unknown, veteran and new, from all over the world.
“I’m incredibly proud of this archive of the past decade and a half of improvised music. It’s been a joy to get a look into the hearts and minds of all these wonderful musicians. But now I’m starting two new shows and it’s time for me to give The Jazz Session to a new host who has the energy and vision to take it into the future.
“Nicky Schrire is absolutely the right person for that. She’s smart, passionate, opinionated and experienced as both a musician and an observer. I’m so excited to watch the show blossom under her leadership.”
And Nicky Schrire is looking forward to her first interviews for TJS: “The upcoming season includes interviews with Maria Schneider, Gretchen Parlato, Dave Liebman, Miho Hazama and more.”

The Jazz Session is also available via Google and Apple podcasts.
