Janette Mason’s ReWired has been three years in the making. So, for last night’s album launch to be completely full felt right: it was a special occasion and a happy evening.

It’s a truism to report that the trio with bassist Tom Mason and drummer Eric Ford have clearly worked extremely consciously and thoroughly with the pianist/composer to get under the complexities, twists and turns of Janette Mason’s music, but the balance and clarity they were bringing to every tune last night was something very special. The balance in an experienced piano trio like this can persuade one – if only briefly – that all can be right with the world.

The idea of the ReWired project is a fascinating one, and I salute Martin Chilton for having done such a brilliant job of defining what the project is all about (link below).

There was a real sense of achievement in the air last night, but one moment stays in my mind. It was after Claire Martin had sung “Blue Moon”. I spotted the expression of complete joy and fulfilment on Janette Mason’s face. Don’t let anyone forget: it takes a lot of focused effort over a very long period to put this kind of project together – particularly in the UK. But the moment of bringing it to fruition is to be savoured, and for those of us who were there, to witness it happen, it wasn’t just a privilege . It was a pleasure to hear Janette and her musicians on such fabulous form.

There will also be another London gig for this trio and this repertoire at The Vortex on 17 July.
