Stephen Keogh’s Global Music Foundation has just announced a series of concerts from artists’ homes over the holiday period, Sebastian writes.
We have all found out in the past two years how impossible it is to replicate the experience of the intimate live gig, but the inclusive , welcoming GMF “house-concert/house party” vibe has been a particularly good one.
A short concert set is followed by a friendly chat. It is a “musicians’ hang” too, with musicians from the GMF family/ teaching faculty in the virtual audience.

Eri Yamamoto has established herself as one of jazz’s most original and compelling pianists and composers.

During the past twenty-six years, Eri has been sharing her uniquely lyrical and evocative music with listeners in New York City, throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan, Africa, Jamaica, and Australia; with appearances in concerts, clubs, and major festivals.
She has a deeply empathetic rapport with her long-standing trio members, bassist David Ambrosio and drummer Ikuo Takeuchi. Together they have recorded several albums, with Eri’s songs portraying a wide range of her experiences – from joyful to introspective, reflecting the vibrancy of New York and exploring mysteries of nature and memory.
In 2018 Eri premiered the Goshu Ondo Suite, an extended work for chorus and her trio. The suite is based on a traditional circle dance song from Shiga, Japan, and draws on the music of many cultures, including Japanese folk music, American jazz, gospel, and blues; and even Congolese Drum rhythms. The live record has received popular and critical acclaim, receiving 4-star reviews, and being chosen among the top recordings of 2019.
She has also dedicated herself to the art of solo piano, moving audiences with her renditions of her own compositions and her spontaneous improvisations.

Bruce Barth, solo pianoJazz pianist and composer Bruce Barth has been sharing his music with listeners the world over for more than two decades. Deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, his music reflects both the depth and breadth of his life and musical experiences. In addition to traveling widely performing his own music, he has also performed with revered jazz masters, as well as collaborated with leading musicians of his own generation. And most notably, his performances feature material from his large book of very powerful and imaginative original compositions, written in a voice that is both deeply personal and expressive.
Bruce has performed on over one hundred recordings and movie soundtracks, including ten as a leader. He is equally at home playing solo piano (American Landscape on Satchmo Jazz Records), leading an all-star septet (East and West on MaxJazz), and composing for a variety of ensembles. His trio has recorded live at the legendary Village Vanguard in New York City.
Within a year of moving to Brooklyn in 1988, Barth toured Japan with Nat Adderley. He started working with Vincent Herring and Stanley Turrentine, and joined Terence Blanchard’s quintet in 1990. During the next four years, he toured extensively with Blanchard, recorded six CD’s and several movie soundtracks, and played onscreen in Spike Lee’s film, Malcolm X.
While in Blanchard’s band, he recorded his first two CD’s as a leader, In Focus and Morning Call on the Enja label, both which were chosen for the New York Times’ top ten lists in their respective years. These recordings displayed not only Barth’s piano work, but the scope of his original com positions and memorable arrangements of jazz standards.
He has continued to release a stream of critically acclaimed recordings in solo, trio, quintet and septet groupings, the latter featured on his 2001 release East and West; with an all-star group playing Barth’s compositions based on memories of his childhood experiences in the Western United States — deserts, ranches, and ghost towns. His Live at the Village Vanguard CD was second on the national radio charts, and won international critical acclaim.
He has performed with James Moody, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Tony Bennett, Freddie Hubbard, Tom Harrell, Victor Lewis, John Patitucci, Lewis Nash, Vincent Herring, George Robert, Steve Wilson, Branford Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, David Sanchez, Terell Stafford, Tim Armacost, Luciana Souza, Karrin Allyson, Dave Stryker, and the Mingus Big Band.

Michael Kanan hails from Boston, Massachusetts where he first began to play the piano at age 7. He started improvising at the keyboard early on, and by age 10 he was listening to jazz. His first instructor was pianist Harvey Diamond, a student of jazz innovator Lennie Tristano. During his years at Boston College, Michael had the opportunity to perform with several jazz greats including Tal Farlow, Lee Konitz, Al Cohn, and Alan Dawson. After graduating college and doing some freelance work around Boston, he moved to New York in 1991 to study with another Tristano student, the pianist Sal Mosca. He established himself in New York, playing and recording with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, and Jorge Rossy, among others. He also developed a growing reputation as a vocal accompanist. In 1996, he joined the band of legendary singer Jimmy Scott, touring the US, Europe, and Japan and recording 4 CDs. In 2001, Michael became the accompanist and arranger for one of today’s most celebrated vocalists, Jane Monheit. With Ms. Monheit’s group, he has toured all over the world, recorded several CDs and DVDs, and made many TV appearances, including The David Letterman Show and The Conan O’Brien Show.
When not on the road with the Monheit band, Michael performs and records with his own groups. He has made two trio recordings for Barcelona’s Fresh Sound New Talent label: “Convergence” and “The Gentleman Is A Dope”, both featuring bassist Ben Street and drummer Tim Pleasant. He has also recorded a duet with his longtime collaborator, alto saxophonist Nat Su, entitled “Dreams And Reflections”. He can be heard around New York with his trio featuring guitarist Greg Ruggiero and bassist Neal Miner.

David O’Rourke – guitar
David O’Rourke has played with many jazz legends such as Tommy Flanagan’s Trio, Cedar Walton’s Trio, Jackie McLean, Billy Higgins, Curtis Fuller, James Spaulding, Vernal Fournier, and Brother Jack McDuff. He collaborated with drummer Lewis Nash on a project that brought Irish music and jazz together for a CD (“Aisling”) by a band they called “The Celtic Jazz Collective”. They played several runs at Jazz Standard as well as a performance in Harvard sponsored by the Cambridge Multicultural Center. David recorded a CD with Larry Willis (piano), Bob Cranshaw (bass) and Al Harewood (drums) and later on wrote an extended orchestral medley from Porgy And Bess for Larry Willis to perform with the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra. His close friendship with George Benson and Hammond B3 player Seleno Clarke led to a 12 year stint with Seleno’s Quintet. From their Harlem base the quintet played festivals in the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada and at various US festivals.
For over a decade, New York City based jazz guitarist, conductor, and arranger he has guided tomorrow’s jazz musicians as ‘house bandleader’ of the Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra. And for his contributions to Jazz Standard Discovery (a music education program that he has led since 1998), David and co-founder James Polsky were named “New Yorkers Of The Week” by NY1 News. He has played with Les Paul and Bucky Pizzarelli and studied with legends such as Barry Galbraith and Pat Martino. He currently leads and writes for his own 20-piece band (The O’Rourkestra) at the Zinc Bar NYC.

Sara Dowling is a jazz singer who is deeply inspired by the repertoire of the classic American songbook, her most important influences are Sarah Vaughan and Betty Carter. And yet, as the clubs who have been booking her regularly in and over the past couple of years – Ronnie Scott’s, the 606 and the Cinnamon Club – have spotted, there really is something different, special and fresh about her. And that she makes audiences want to come back to hear her again. It is not her heritage, although that is unusual: she was born in Muscat / Oman with Jordanian and Irish parents. Nor is it her first career: as a professional cellist. So what is it? First, the fabulous fearlessness with which she approaches the act of singing. And the burning conviction, the irresistible communicative power and jaw-dropping musicality she brings to it. And maybe the fact that she leaves no stone unturned in her preparation. As she says : “I like to learn huge lists of songs that belong to one composer, to get the feel of the composer and his style. There is beauty to be found in all songs if they are written by one of the greats. That’s the beauty of the American Songbook.” She trusts her voice and its range of timbre. She trusts her ability both to convey the emotion of very slow ballads – or to bring joy as she rip-roars and scats through faster songs. And above all she makes a wonderful connection both to the music and to the audience. Sara leads her own group and often guests with the Ronnie Scott’s All Star Band.

New York City pianist Steve Ash is a favourite of those in the know – the ultimate sideman, and an extremely fine trio pianist as well. In his 40 years on the scene, he has appeared with Frank Wess, Jon Hendricks, Kurt Elling, Sheila Jordan, Jimmy Cobb, Louis Hayes, Eddie Harris, Warren Vache, Harry Allen, Joe Magnarelli, Annie Ross, Mel Lewis and Vernell Fournier, just to name a few.
He has performed in many New York City jazz clubs, including:
The Blue Note, Village Vanguard, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Birdland, Smoke Jazz and Supper Club, Smalls, Mezzrow, Jazz Gallery, Iridium, Django, 55 Bar, Zinc Bar, and the 75 Club.
Steve was honored to be selected by The Kennedy Center and The U.S. State Department to tour West Africa and France as part of The Jazz Ambassadors in 2004. His touring experience also includes performing at The Bern Jazz Festival with Warren Vache’s All Stars in 2001, The Caesarea Jazz Festival in Israel with The Harry Allen Quartet in 2006, The New Mexico Jazz Festival with Jon Hendricks in 2012, Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai in 2018 with The Bruce Harris Quintet.
His recordings include Steve Ash, “Once I Loved”, The Steve Ash Trio, “Everything I Love,” Warren Vache’s “ Swingtime”, the Metropolitan Bopera-House, “Still Comin’ On Up”, Barbara Lea with The Loren Schoenberg Big Band, “Black Butterfly”, The Neal Miner Sextet, “The Evening Sound”, and Fabien Mary, “Conception”.

He has conducted piano master classes at the University of the Arts (Philadelphia, PA), Metropolitan State College (Denver, CO), and West Chester University (West Chester, PA).
Jim was the Art Tatum Scholarship Artist in Residence at the University of Toledo (Ohio) where he taught master classes and performed solo piano concerts.
Jim was raised on a farm and ranch in North Dakota, and discovered his love for piano and jazz at an early age. He attended college at the University of Colorado at Denver, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Scoring and Arranging, and was awarded its Student Achievement Award for composing “Ocean Sojourn,” an orchestral tone poem which he performed with the Denver Symphony Orchestra, James Setapen, conducting. He is listed in the Who’s Who of American Colleges and Universities. In Denver, Jim began his professional career performing and touring with local and nationally recognised musicians, including the Grammy-nominated vocal jazz group, Rare Silk.
Kathy Ridl – designer and musician – specializes in music related graphics projects, having designed over 300 CD covers, and programs and posters for concerts, festivals and theatrical productions. Kathy was raised in a family of musicians where music was the joyful center of life. She studied viola and bass, and earned a degree in Music and Media from the University of Colorado at Denver, majoring in Scoring and Arranging. Kathy plays bass with the Gypsy Jazz group Stringzville, and plays viola when the occasional occasion arises.

Barry Green’s star is rising high on the European Jazz scene.
