Seven additional performers/bands have been announced for the 2022 Buxton Festival. Under the direction of Neil Hughes, it will be the first Buxton Festival to include jazz concerts. We also have the full listing of jazz events.
14 July at 8pm: National Youth Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Mark Armstrong, performing as part of their Basie & Beyond tour. Their program will explore the impact on popular music made by Basie and will feature iconic charts by the many great arrangers he employed, including Thad Jones, Frank Foster, Oliver Nelson and many others.
15 July at 8pm: Bassist Ben Crosland, will perform music by The Kinks’ lead singer, Ray Davies. Crosland is joined by an all-star band featuring Theo Travis on saxes, John Etheridge on guitar, Steve Lodder on keyboards, and Nic France on drums.
17 July at 4pm: Singer-pianist Jeremy Sassoon, performing alongside bassist Nicola Farnon and drummer Phil Johnson. The trio will perform music by some of the great Jewish songwriters of the 20th Century, all the way from George Gershwin to Billy Joel, Amy Winehouse and many others.
17 July at 8pm: An evening of dancing. The first set will feature a workshop from Buxton Festival’s own professional ballroom dancers, who will help the audience acquaint themselves with such styles as the tango and the foxtrot. The floor will then be opened up to audience members for dancing in the second set, accompanied by the Buxton Festival Dance Band, alongside guest singers Andy Bayley and Emma Holcroft.
21 July at 8pm: Vocalist and guitarist Dominic Halpin with his band, The Honey B’s (Richard Wetherall, piano; Ben Wiltshire, bass; Jonathan Price, drums; Kim Nishikawara, saxophone). Their set will feature iconic swing tunes from the ’50s onwards; an homage to suave artists such as Dean Martin, Bobby Darin and Elvis Presley.
22 July at 8pm: Nigel Price‘s celebrated Organ Trio with regular saxophonist Vasilis Xenopoulos. The trio, comprised of Price on Guitar, Ross Stanley on organ, and Joel Barford on drums, will perform music from their recent album, Wes Reimagined (2021, Ubuntu), as well as their usual assortment of hard-hitting jazz numbers.
23 July at 8pm: Award-winning vocalist Ian Shaw will give a performance saluting two of his heroes, rock ‘n’ roll icons David Bowie and Joni Mitchell. He is joined for this performance by Barry Green and Jamie Safir on keyboards, Simon Little on bass, and Dave Ohm on drums. This is in addition to the already announced duo concert that Shaw will perform with Guy Barker.
This announcement follows on from the announcement of the first performers at the end of last year (NEWS STORY HERE).
Priority booking will open on Tuesday 1 March, and public booking will follow on Tuesday 29 March.
