PizzaExpress Live are letting us know about some forthcoming dates, including a birthday definitely worth celebrating… that of a cornerstone of the British jazz scene for several decades, and one of the most supportive and encouraging people ever: it will be bassist Dave Green‘s 80th on 5 March:

PRESS RELEASE – Dave Green celebrates his 80th birthday at Soho Jazz Club, among other jazz greats in the coming months…
British jazz legend Dave Green has worked with everyone from Charlie Watts to Sonny Rollins and Coleman Hawkins. Join him on his birthday weekend in Soho in a celebration of his career that brings together a mix of jazz stars and demonstrates why he remains one of the most in-demand bassists in the UK.
Special guests include the Scott Hamilton Quartet, the Karen Sharp Quartet, prolific saxophonist Alan Barnes, famous Avant-garde Saxophonist Evan Parker (there is an album imminent), internationally acclaimed trombonist Mark Nightingale, Norma Winstone with the Nikki Iles Quartet and Henry Lowther’s Still Waters.
Master saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi, renowned for his innovation and integrity, joins us in February with his Quartet comprised of Jason Rebello, Mark Hodgson and Stephen Keogh.
Following in the theme of saxophonists, Rudresh Mahanthappa’s ‘Hero Trio’ pay tribute to Mahanthappa’s greatest influences with an album on interpretations.
Also lined up (yet to go on sale), is American jazz saxophonist Rick Margitza, who will be joining us on stage in May.

Live music has always been an important part of PizzaExpress. Founder Peter Boizot was a jazz lover and constantly sought ways to integrate music into his restaurants, whether at PizzaExpress branches from the late 1960’s, at his other ventures like Pizza on the Park or at Kettner’s from the 1970’s. The flagship venue at 10 Dean Street, London has hosted internationally acclaimed music since its first ticketed shows in May 1976.
