It’s rare to hear vocal groups at jazz festivals these days, so I was delighted to meet up with members of Flight Call when they appeared at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival.
The trio of singers – Pete Horsfall, Lucy-Anne Daniels and Georgia Cecile – performed at the Parabola Arts Centre and were also featured with the BBC Concert Orchestra in the Soul Jazz Summit show in the Big Top.

I met up with Pete and Lucy-Anne after their shows, and asked if they saw themselves in the vocal group tradition of such classic outfits as Lambert, Hendricks and Ross?
Pete commented: “We want to create a new tradition – to take this style of music forward. We aim to go our own way.”
Lucy-Anne added: “I have always been inspired by the great jazz singers, though I started out in gospel music.”
Their performances – without written charts on music stands – require a lot of rehearsal, to explore harmonic possibilities and tighten up the phrasing. “Five or six rehearsals before our gigs,” added Pete.
