Photographer David Harvey has a new exhibition in Queens Park NW6 until 10 August which brings back memories of The Junction in Brixton.

Combining his love of music and photography was a no-brainer for musician and snapper David Harvey.

He has captured musicians in unique moments of pure joy and spontaneity in a stunning collection of portraits featured in a new exhibition at Wordly, Wicked and Wise gallery in Queens Park, London.

‘I’ve always loved jazz and photography, and have been taking picture of live performances for years. So, it was a marriage that had to happen,’ said David.

Some of his black and white portraits are taken at former jazz venue The Junction in Brixton (2015-2022) that nurtured up and coming talent, as well as established players, founded by musicians Paul Canton and Luke Fowler.

‘It was a magical five years at one of the most vibrant local venues in Brixton,’ recalled David.

‘Everyone who visited The Junction discovered it was special. Over the years it became a focal point for musicians to play at one of the regular jams or enjoy one of the numerous gigs. There was nowhere else you could gain free entry to hear music six or seven days a week and see rising stars and more established players from the UK and overseas. The food was good, the drinks affordably priced, the staff friendly, the atmosphere welcoming and inclusive. What wasn’t to like?’’

Some of his photographs pay homage to the musicians who played at the venue, a permanent reminder of The Junction’s now legendary history.

His portraits have been featured in two books The Look of Jazz (link to review below) and Jumpin’ at the Junction.

A musician himself, David plays flute and sax and performs music from the Baroque era through to jazz and contemporary music. He was a member of the Jazz Flute Big band and his compositions include Reflections: Ten pieces for Flute Alone (Saxtet).

David Harvey’s exhibition is at Wordly, Wicked and Wise Gallery in Queens Park until 10 August. A forthcoming exhibition is planned for February 2025 at The Metronome in London.
