Jazz is the sound of surprise, and the 606 Club’s programme has some interesting and appealing dates coming up in the next few weeks:
Thursday 28 October: A Celebration of Christian Brewer‘s life and music, led by Leon Greening and featuring Alex Garnett and Sam Mayne. with Adam King and Matt Skelton
Leon Greening worked closely with Christian Brewer (1965-2021) in the UK and Europe from the late 90s onwards. “I organised this tribute at the 606 for Christian because we played at the club so often. ” The first set will consist entirely of Christian’s compositions. In the second set the quintet will re-create the 1959 album Cannon Ball Adderley Quintet in Chicago with Coltrane which Greening and Brewer were to have played in 2020 before the pandemic set in, and before Christian’s passing.

Monday 15th Nov (EFG LJF): Mark Lockheart’s Generation with Laura Jurd, Will Barry, Will Cleasby and Steve Watts
This is a special LJF programme for Mark Lockheart’s new ensemble.

Tuesday 16 November (EFG LJF): Shaney Forbes explores the music of Blossom Dearie
This is an all-instrumental gig also feat. Ruben Fox on sax, Artie Zaitz-guitar et al that Shane has only performed once about 5 years ago so it is essentially new

Wednesday 17 November (EFG LJF): Gary Husband’s Speed Racers + 1 (David Preston)
This is a newish Trio collaborative project with Gary, Sam Burgess and Graeme Blevins made even more distinctive with the addition of David on guitar for this gig.

Thursday 18 November (EFG LJF): Gwilym Simcock and Friends
With a band including Nick Smart (trumpet), Ant Law (guitar) and Laurence Cottle (bass), Gwilym and Friends will perform “music I’ve specially put together for the evening! It’s been a long time and I wanted to do something special given the long wait and tough time it’s been…”

Tuesday 23 November Peter Bernstein and Jim Mullen
US guitarist Peter Bernstein took the initiative and expressed an interest in playing with Jim. This will be their first time ever time performing together!
